The J.N. Tata Endowment was set up in 1892 by the Founder of the Tata group, Jamsetji N. Tata, to encourage young people to avail of higher studies at some of the best universities in the world. It is the first Tata benefaction in the field of education, and possibly, the first of its kind, anywhere.

For the past 118 years the Endowment has been helping scholars of merit to fulfill their aspirations of a world class education through its loan scholarship programs. The scholarships are awarded for pursuing Postgraduate/Ph.D./Postdoctoral studies abroad in all disciplines and subjects. The Endowment annually, selects around 120 meritorious scholars through a rigorous selection process for the prestigious J.N. Tata Endowment loan scholarships for higher studies abroad only. Over the years, several J.N. Tata scholars have distinguished themselves in various walks of life.

The endowment awards only loan scholarships. The loan amount (ranging between Rs.1,00,000/- and Rs.10,00,000/-) awarded to each scholar. However, the selected scholars may also qualify for a gift award of Rs.7,50,000/- and a Travel Grant can be a maximum of Rs. 50,000/- from the from the allied Trusts as may be based on the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. The amount to be awarded to each scholar by way of loan and gift scholarship is determined on the basis of norms laid down for the purpose, and does not cover the full cost of studies. Scholarships are granted for higher studies in all disciplines and subjects.

Eligibility criteria

 • Only Indian nationals are eligible for the scholarship

 •Graduates of a recognised Indian University, with a consistently good academic record

 • Students in the final year of the degree course and those awaiting final year results

 • Academicians and other mid-career professionals, upto the age of 45 years, with experience in their fields, who wish to go abroad for further specialization

How to apply

The application forms are available online on institute web site. Candidates not have to download the application, fill it offline and submit it from the same email-id which is mentioned in the application form, along with a scanned copy of the letter of recommendation (LOR). Applications should not be sent by post. 

All scanned copies of the required documents are must be submitted at the time of the interview. Candidates who are selected for the next level are intimated over email from March onwards. The interviews will start from March onwards.

There is no specific date for submission but all completed application forms should be submitted at least 45 days before the candidate departs overseas. For instance : if candidate scheduled to leave on 15th September then application should be submitted by 31st July.
