To be eligible to take the CGFNS Qualifying Exam you will need to be successful on a CGFNS credentials review. The authority will evaluate your education and registration/ license/ certification to verify that you are a first-level, general (registered) nurse (as defined historically by the International Council of Nurses).

Academic requirements are:

You must have completed sufficient classroom instruction (theory) and clinical practice in each of the following :

If you have not completed any and/or a sufficient number of hours in each of the above areas, you will be ineligible to take the CGFNS Qualifying Exam until you complete an entire course (both theory and clinical) in the deficient area from a government-approved nursing school.

Licensure requirements are :

You must also have been registered:

Verification of both registrations must be sent to CGFNS International directly from the licensing body (ies).

Once you are eligible, you will be registered for the exam from the choices of test locations and dates you made in your application. When registration closes for a certain exam date, the authority post the centers that will be open at www.cgfns.org/sections/programs/cp/cp-qedates.shtml. If the exam location you choose is not operating on the desired exam date, the authority will inform you of your options for a different exam date or location.

If you need to change the exam date or location you must submit a change request form or submit your request in writing to CGFNS International. Change request forms are accepted via mail or email. Changes must be received by CGFNS no later than 10 weeks prior to the exam date. Any requests received with less than 10 weeks until the exam cannot be honored.

Approximately five to six weeks after taking the CGFNS qualifying examination, CGFNS will send out letters with test results to all test-takers. Mail delivery varies from country to country and it may take up to four additional weeks for test-takers internationally to receive these letters. These letters tell candidates if they passed or failed the examination, and they also give a numerical score and a passing score for their examination. The test reports also contain a diagnostic profile with information on how the candidate performed in four different subject areas, or client needs categories : safe and effective care environment, health promotion and maintenance, psychosocial integrity, and physiological integrity. These categories form the basis not only of the CGFNS Qualifying Exam, but also of the NCLEX-RN examination.

Score reports can also be viewed online on the CGFNS website.
