Geology : Eligibility & Course Areas

There are a number of universities and Institutes offering bachelor, master and doctorate degree in Geology. For admission to B.Sc General or honour's, 10+2 with Science either in non-medical or medical subjects with at least 50% marks is required. For master degree, a bachelor degree with Geology as one of the subject is r equired with minimum 50% marks and for Ph.D. there is requirement of at least 55% marks in master degree. However, the rules for admission to bachelor, masters and research degree vary from university to university/institutes.

To start a career in Geology, one should complete at least a masters in Geology such as M.A. or M. Sc. in Geology. While a bachelor’s degree in Geology will secure some entry-level positions, the better qualified you are, the better position you can secure. Students interested in a professional career in the Geosciences should prepare to continue their education into advanced degrees. A master’s degree is required for major professional entry-level positions, a Ph.D. is necessary for university teaching and to secure higher-level research positions.

Some of the universities in India offering Geology courses are Aligarh Muslim University, Andhra University, Annamalai University, Amravati University, Banaras Hindu University etc. The Union Public Service Commission holds tests for employment of Geologists in Central Government Agencies. They can get good jobs in the Central Ground Water Board and the Geological Survey of India, Coal India, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, Mineral Exploration Authority, Hindustan Zinc and many other organizations which offer excellent job opportunities for the Geologists. The Defence and Para-military forces also utilize the services of Geologists.
