An officer in the Navy at a very young age assumes the responsibility of commanding his men. They are provided with the highest level of exposure and can use of latest equipment on the ships, submarines and aircraft. For the talented and hardworking Officers, the opportunity is available to reach the very top i.e. they can rise to the rank of an Admiral. Even amongst sailors, the deserving can upgrade themselves as Commissioned Officers and rise as per their competence.
The Indian Navy Officers are broadly classified as :
• Executive
Executive Officers, who seeks for the command of a naval ship, submarines and aircraft, can specialise in any of the fields like
- Gunnery & Missiles
- Navigation and Direction
- Anti-Submarine Warfare
- Communications
- Aviation (Pilot) : Most Navy Pilots fly ship-borne helicopters and shore based maritime reconnaissance aircraft, fighter aircraft such as Sea Harrier or Mig 29K etc.
- Observer : Observer officer operates various state of the art equipment including sonics, sonars, radars and communication equipment.
- Submarine
- Hydrography : Hydrographic Officers are responsible for collecting information required for making the nautical charts used by the Indian Navy and other Navies around the world.
- Diving : Diving Officer job range from under water inspection and repair of ships to defence of Indian Navy maritime assets. Alternatively one may opt to become a Diving Cadre Officer wherein one would be required to undertake a Clearence Diving Officers course and/ or a marine Commando course.
- Law : Law Officers deals with the legal needs of the Navy.
- Air Traffic Control
- Naval Armament Inspection : Naval Armament Inspection Officers ensure the quality, safety and reliability of naval armament supplied to the Navy by various agencies.
- Logistics
- Provost : Provost Officers deals with policing, regulatory, and security and vigilance needs of the Navy
• Engineering
Engineering Officers, who works in gigantic naval dockyards and indigenous production units, are responsible for keeping all the hi-tech machinery and propulsion systems of the navy serviceable.
One can join in the Naval Architecture Cadre of the Engineering Branch that involves in the designing, construction, quality controlling, repairing and new construction works of naval vessels.
• Electrical
Electrical Officers are those who are in charge of managing and maintaining the ship's integral power generation and distribution system like propulsion, radar, radio, underwater weapons, missile, computer etc.
• Education
Education Officers play a major role in the training of naval officers and sailors by giving scientific and methodical instructions, including theoretical aspects of technical subjects of all branches of the navy. An Education Officer can specialise in like Meteorology or Oceanography and in almost all specialisations of the Executive Branch
The basic training for all the officers inducted into the Indian Navy under various schemes are given at Naval Academy Ezhimala (NAVAC), located in Kannur (Cannanore) of Kerala.
